Starting as a quite small New Years meeting amongst friends in Vienna 2010, Folk Marathon has grown over the years to become what it is now.

Additionally, there have been some smaller events, organised independently:
- A "mini folk marathon" in Pazin / Croatia, twice.
- A "folk half marathon" in Voldum, Denmark, twice.
